Scleral Lenses
Scleral contact lenses are a special type of therapeutic contact lens that are a valuable tool for patients with ocular surface diseases such as dry eye disease. They protect the surface of the eye and provide continuous hydration to the cornea. They do all this while also providing vision correction, which mean that they replace your glasses or regular contact lenses. Scleral lenses can be used in conjunction with other therapies.
Scleral lenses have a larger diameter than regular contact lenses. Unlike regular contact lenses, this large diameter allows them to cover the entire cornea and create a fluid reservoir between the surface of the eye and the back surface of the lens, hydrating the cornea. They also protect the eye surface from environmental factors that might be contributing to dry eye and from the shearing forces of eye lids or form eyelids that are abnormal.
