LipiScan
Perspective Optometry is proud to offer LipiScan to patients at our Vancouver clinic. LipiScan is the first dedicated high definition gland imager designed to allow eye doctors to image meibomian gland structure to help diagnose meibomian gland function and structure. The equipment shows a multidimensional view of the meibomian glands to help doctors get a complete picture of a patient's glands and it allows the patient to also see the condition of their glands, which helps improve the patient's own understanding of their dry eye disease.
Good meibomian gland function is essential for a healthy ocular surface. Healthy tear film has three layers: the mucin layer, the aqueous layer and he lipid layer. The lipid layer is made of oils produced by the meibomian glands. The meibomian glands are found within the eyelids. The lipid layer is the outermost layer of health tear film and it functions to prevent evaporation of the tear film. It also functions as a barrier that protects the surface of the eye from the environment. If the meibomian glands are not functioning properly, your eyes will have a deficient lipid layer, causing evaporation and drying out of the eye surface. The result might be symptoms of dry eyes, irritation, inflammation and diseases of the eye surface.
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic condition where the meibomian glands do not work properly due to gland obstructions and changes in the quality and quantity of gland secretions. LipiScan allows doctors to observe the meibomian glands and diagnose MGD.
