LipiFlow Thermal pulsation

LipiScan

At Perspective Optometry, we offer LipiFlow thermal pulsation treatment for dry eye. LipiFlow is an in-office procedure that treats meibomian gland dysfunction. Meibomian glands are located along the edge of the eyelids where the eye lashes are found. Meibomian glands make the oil that is an essential part of healthy tears. The oil is what prevents the eyes from drying out too quickly. When the glands are not working properly because they are blocked or clogged, dry eye disease can result.

Thermal pulsation uses heat and massage to unblock clogged meibomian glands. A single LipiFlow has been shown to be effective from nine months to three years.

Consistent results have provided lasting relief to many individuals with chronic dry eyes in Canada and the United States. In a clinical study, 79% of patients reported improved overall dry eye symptoms (ranging from 10% to 100% improvement) within four weeks of a single LipiFlow treatment.

We also offer meibomian gland imaging through using LipiScan. LipiScan is a medical imaging device that allows you to see the structure and condition of your meibomian glands. The image also allows your doctor to determine whether LipiFlow might benefit you. The image at the top of this page is a LipiScan of the eyelid showing healthy meibomian glands.
